A former school house for the Fishertown area until the 1960s, Wasps redeveloped the building in 2015.

A short walk from Nairn Beach, Links Studios serves a small group of visual artists based in the Highlands.

First opened in 1851, the surrounding community’s children passed through the school until it closed in the late 1960s. During busy fishing seasons, many pupils were taken out of class to work alongside their families. Mr Jamieson, the headmaster at the start of the 20th century, noted during term time: ‘Attendance pretty good except in the afternoons when baiting keeps a good many of the bigger boys at home’. Absences were also due to ‘bramble gathering and golf’ and ‘potato gathering’.

Today, the building provides dedicated creative space to around 15 artists, including painters, tapestry makers and sculptors.

Botanical and figurative artist Dierdre McCrimmon has been based at Links since 2023. She has said of her experience there:

‘I am very fond of my studio at Links. Three minutes from the beach, I walk before my session and take “sky mind” back into the studio with me. As a visual figurative artist, connected with the elements, organic matter of tree, rock and flower weave through my female forms. Naturally, my studio setting contributes to my practice.

My studio is a single space with my own door, giving me the peace necessary for being in the flow state to make my work. An added bonus, we have a small gallery space for exhibiting, projects and meetings. All in, Links is a good working space for a dedicated artist. I love it!’
