With support from Dumfries and Galloway Council, Wasps was able to buy the two early Victorian era former town houses – Claverhouse and Cannonwalls – opening in 2010 to provide much needed studio provision for the region. They are on the same stretch of road as the Tolbooth Arts Centre and the Selkirk Arms Hotel.

After eight years of support from local artists and planning on Wasps’ part, Cannonwalls and Claverhouse was opened in 2010.

This linked townhouse development provides 14 artist studio spaces, as well as a communal kitchen and toilet facilities in a contemporary facility in the heart of Kirkcudbright, Scotland’s Artist Town.

Among those based at Cannonwalls and Claverhouse is rug maker Laura Derby, who ‘paints with yarn’ to create unique, hand crafted textile rugs, wall hangings, mindfulness mats and small pieces of furniture. She has proudly achieved the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere Certification Mark in recognition of the provenance of her work and use of 100% British wool.

Speaking about her studio practice, Laura said: ‘Working on my own in a rural area there’s not the same amount of creatives. So it’s been lovely to come into a community setting.’
